New Zealand saltwater fly fishing is still in its relative infancy compared to most parts of the world and yet it has been practiced here for quite a number of years by a small and dedicated group. The numbers partaking in the sport today have grown significantly in recent years.
The options are wide and varied from chasing Kahawai at river mouths and in small harbors to catching Yellow Tail Kingfish from the rocks and at outer reefs from charter boats. Mako Shark, Striped Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna and all manner of species are available to the angler and it really depends on where you want to put your focus as to how you will rig and set up your gear and plan your fishing…
There is a wealth of species I haven't caught personally or haven't been targeted to date by New Zealand Salt fly anglers, as we add these species to our capture list this page will be updated to include that content...
I hope the information below is of some use to those starting out…
At this point I have included little information on “Micro Salt Fly” which is becoming very popular in Australia and I believe could well do the same here. However, I personally have little experience of it, something I plan to change over the next 6 months or so… When we have accumulated some info we’ll put it up… stay tuned…
